Hospital Administrators
Free consultant guide below!
Overview
Wound care has certainly evolved from the 'traditional' gauze
dressings to modern treatments such as; moist wound healing,
collagen products, silver antimicrobials, growth factors, dermal
scaffolds, bioengineered tissue, topical
negative pressure and hyperbaric oxygen.
But wound care can easily be lost within a hospital system.
Wounds exist across almost all departments...some wounds are acute,
some are chronic...some are healing as expected and others are not
healing or deteriorating. And standards of care have rapidly
changed, creating certain clinical and legal issues.
With so many different touch points for wound care responsibility
across a large organization, it's common to find hospital
administration not realizing the true impact of caring for skin and
wound care issues. These are difficult issues to manage.
Outpatient Opportunities
Hundreds of hospitals across the country have established
outpatient wound center programs, offering both patient and facility
benefits. They've discovered that a systematic approach to wound
care, including appropriate diagnostic workups, evidence based
treatment protocols and outpatient or inpatient interventions lead
to superior clinical outcomes, positive revenue streams and well
deserved community accolades.
In some instances, hospitals have outsourced the management of these
outpatient centers. In other instances, hospitals have taken on those
responsibilities themselves.
Management companies provide certain services, both clinical and
financial, that streamline the operational aspects of an outpatient
center. But of course, this service comes at a price.
Hospitals choosing to 'go it alone' lose certain benchmarking
capabilities and potentially fall behind on reimbursement and
clinical issues.
They are entrusting their clinical and management staff stays on
top of these fast changing elements.
There is an intermediate step however, sitting somewhere between
a full blown management company and the 'go it alone' concept. Some
companies are now offering hybrid services, providing consulting services
on an as-needed-basis
across multiple hospital clients. For example, they might work with
a hospital client at the beginning of the process, building the
business case, discussing staffing issues, establishing clinical
protocols, advising on reimbursement issues and so forth. From time
to time, they update the clinic staff with relevant information.
